Puerto Morales, half an hour north of Playa del Carmen has great food and a perfect sandy beach to launch your snorkelling adventures.
A smaller, quieter beach destination with surprising attractions
Puerto Morales has all the laid-back and quieter appeal of a small beach destination, plus great restaurants and beach clubs. The traditional favourite is Pelicanos. Another reason to visit is the Alma Libre bookstore on the main square. They have the only stock of English language books, as well as French and German, locally. Great selection of new and used, and they buy back ones you have read.
On the way from Playa, just before the Puerto Morales turnoff on the right, is the wonderful Jardin Botanico. Drive slowly or you will miss the entrance. It is a large forest reserve with signposted walks through an untouched jungle with a reconstructed Mayan village, and an early chicle harvesting camp. Look for wonderful butterflies and the little brown agoutis on the forest floor.
